Vascular Lesions are commonly encountered in dermatological practice and most often include Port-wine Stains, Telangiectasia, Reticular and Spider Veins, Solitary Hemangioma, Pyogenic Granuloma, Rosacea and Red Acne Scars. Unfortunately, Vascular lesions are unlikely to disappear on their own and can cause great concern to patients. As a result, patients frequently seek treatments for both medical and cosmetic reasons.
Over time advances in the use of lasers and light sources have allowed physicians to effectively and safely treat vascular lesions. The destruction of vessels can occur either through photomechanical or photothermal methods. Laser treatment is used to induce damage to the vessel’s walls through coagulation whilst minimising damage to surrounding tissue. Different laser wavelengths can be used to successfully treat vascular lesions, with each wavelength having its own advantage. The gold standard laser for the application of Vascular lesions is the 585nm wavelength, due to the spectral absorption peak of the target chromophore.
